A large portion of the neighborhood is located on the National Register of Historic Places as the Elizabeth Historic District. The neighborhood contains two major hospitals and a number of historic places that have been converted into new restaurants, shops, and offices. Here’s the latest on the protests at major US universities
A police officer takes aim at a pro-Palestinian protester on the UCLA campus early this morning, as numerous explosions were heard amid violent scuffles between law enforcement and students refusing to move. Some protesters brought small body bags marked with the names of children killed by Israeli counterstrikes. Daniel Harris, a fourth-year student, said he stopped to observe the demonstrations on Tuesday evening, after the university chancellor said the encampment was “unlawful”, and could see tensions rising anew. Counter-protesters used speakers to play recordings of a crying child at a loud volume. A masked man attempted to hop the fence surrounding the encampment but was forced out by security. UCLA cancelled all classes on Wednesday and with the exception of the central meeting area, the normally lively campus was mostly deserted.

“Those involved in launching fireworks at other people, spraying chemicals and physically assaulting others will be found, arrested, and prosecuted, as well as anyone involved in any form of violence or lawlessness,” Bass wrote. Aerial footage showed people wielding sticks or poles to attack wooden boards that had been put up as a makeshift barricade to protect the encampment, some holding placards or umbrellas. UCLA students who witnessed the moments leading up to the attack on the encampment described a harrowing scene, which started before midnight. As the Los Angeles mayor called the violence “abhorrent” and California’s governor said he was monitoring the situation, UCLA announced it was cancelling all classes on Wednesday “due to the distress caused by the violence that took place on Royce Quad late last night”. Columbia's police action happened on the 56th anniversary of a similar move to quash an occupation of Hamilton Hall by students protesting racism and the Vietnam War. In addition, police and protesters clashed at the University of Arizona's Tucson campus, according to the Arizona Daily Star.

"Hamas' disapproval, after their acts of 'unadulterated evil'—which they've pledged to repeat "again and again"—is a testament to President Biden's moral clarity," he added. "President Biden has stood against Antisemitism his entire life. And he will never stop. That's why he is carrying out the first-ever national strategy to combat Antisemitism." "Hamas is a vicious terrorist organization that has spent decades murdering innocents," Bates told Newsweek. "Hamas perpetrated the deadliest massacre of the Jewish people since the Holocaust, which makes them the least credible voice that exists on this subject."
UCLA chancellor condemns ‘instigators’ who attacked pro-Palestinian camp on campus
In this case, these U.S. protests come as Congress deliberates over $14 billion in funding to Israel, including for military uses, in addition to the $3.8 billion in U.S. aid the country already receives annually. Demands for a cease-fire in the fighting over Gaza have become a rallying cry at the protests, as have as accusations of genocide against the Palestinian people and anger at the U.S. and President Joe Biden for their support of Israel, according to CCC’s tracking. Pro-Palestinian protesters at the Chapel Hill campus of the University of North Carolina (UNC) are being detained Tuesday morning after the university sent them a demand to vacate their encampment. The university called in the Portland Police Bureau after campus police were unable to enter the library, she added. Pro-Palestinian protests on college campuses have entered their second week – just as many universities prepare for graduation ceremonies in the coming weeks.

In a statement, Macron condemned the rocket attacks by Hamas and said Israel had the right to defend itself but also expressed concern about the plight of the civilian population in Gaza. Palestinians across the world mark the "Nakba" or "Catastrophe" each year on May 15 to mark their displacement in the 1948 war around Israel's creation. The violence showed little sign of abating Saturday as Israeli airstrikes killed at least 10 people and rocket attacks from Gaza killed a man in Israel.
Jewish students condemn ‘toxic’ anti-Israel protests on UK campuses
Officers said they used flash-bangs to disperse the crowd but denied using teargas as part of the operation. Officers were seen leading protesters handcuffed with zip-ties to a line of police buses waiting outside campus gates. The clashes began shortly after Block, the UCLA chancellor, said the campus’s pro-Palestine encampment was “unlawful”, adding that students who remained in it would face disciplinary action. But while Los Angeles police arrived at the scene at about 1.40am, officers did not immediately break up the two sets of protesters, and the clashes continued for at least an hour, the Los Angeles Times and CalMatters reported. Meghna Mair, a second-year undergraduate who said she took part in pro-Palestinian protests last week, also witnessed the masked group march through campus on their way to the encampment. French President Emmanuel Macron spoke with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Friday and called for peace in the region.
WASHINGTON - Hundreds were arrested Wednesday after pro-Palestinian protests broke out on Capitol Hill, with demonstrators flooding into the Cannon House Office Building and large crowds gathering with flags and signs around the Capitol complex. U.S. officials have so far stopped short of demands for a cease-fire, but pressed Israel on Friday for a "humanitarian pause" in its military offensive to allow more aid to enter Gaza and for the release of the more than 200 hostages being held by Hamas. California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt, a small college in Northern California, issued a shelter-in-place order for students living on campus, due to "continuing criminal activity" early Tuesday morning, according to the university's website. “More than 100-plus journalists have been killed because they are exposing war crimes. And there’s been the bare minimum of speaking up for them from the Western media,” she said. She argued that there is some bias at play when Western journalists champion the causes of American or European reporters kidnapped, arrested, prosecuted or killed abroad while, she said, seemingly looking the other way when nonwhite journalists are harmed.
Last week, during a Congressional committee hearing, the presidents of three ivy league universities were ensnarled in controversy when they gave “legalistic” answers to a question about whether “calling for the genocide of Jews” violated their policies. One has so far resigned, university donors have threatened to withhold funding and the Republican-led House of Representatives passed a resolution condemning their testimony. Portland State University (PSU) officials have asked the city's police department to help remove dozens of protesters who they said had broken into and occupied a university library on Monday evening, blocking campus safety officers from entering the building. Pro-Palestinian protests and encampments on college campuses have entered their second week, as law enforcement arrest hundreds and remaining protesters occupy campus buildings. Late on Tuesday night, a masked group surrounded the encampment in solidarity with Gaza, throwing fireworks and violently attacking students. Students and reporters for multiple outlets said university-hired security forces locked themselves in nearby buildings and police looked on for hours before intervening.
New York City Mayor Eric Adams said this morning that preliminary numbers indicate that more than 40% of those arrested at student protests at Columbia and CUNY were "not from the school and they were outsiders." The arrests came from at least 60 colleges and institutions participating in protests and encampments in solidarity with the Palestinian cause and calling for their schools to divest from Israel. A video shared by IfNotNow shows protesters continuing to sing while handcuffed and sitting on the sidewalk among a group of police officers.
Nair said the demonstrations at UCLA were largely peaceful when she attended last week, shortly after the encampment was established. The Los Angeles Times reported that a group of security guards could be seen observing the clashes, but that they did not intervene. The UCLA campus police (UCPD) showed up shortly after 11pm to break up the conflict, but left within minutes, the Daily Bruin, UCLA’s student newspaper, reported. On campus on Wednesday morning, a helicopter hovered overhead while groups of security guards and law enforcement stood around a sectioned-off area of campus filled with tents. A police spokesperson told the French television channel BFMTV, that a water canon, along with 4,200 police officers, including riot police, were in place throughout the French capital.
The White House says taking over campus buildings is wrong following protests at Columbia University overnight that saw protesters take over a university facility. To get inside Saturday's dinner, some guests had to hurry through hundreds of protesters outraged over the mounting humanitarian disaster for Palestinian civilians in Gaza. They condemned Biden for his support of Israel's military campaign and Western news outlets for what they said was undercoverage and misrepresentation of the conflict. One of the few mentions came from Kelly O'Donnell, president of the correspondents' association, who briefly noted some 100 journalists killed in Israel's 6-month-old war against Hamas in Gaza. In an evening dedicated in large part to journalism, O'Donnell cited journalists who have been detained across the world, including Americans Evan Gershkovich in Russia and Austin Tice, who is believed to be held in Syria. Noah, the UCLA law student, said he wasn’t happy with UCLA’s approach to the encampment and that he expected to see even more division after this week’s violence.
This current wave of protests on behalf of Palestinians represents some of the largest on this issue in the United States, where, historically, most Palestinian solidarity activism has existed among some minority communities, university campuses and the political fringe. At Saturday's rally, protesters held a moment of silence for those killed in Israel's response offensive. More than 9,480 Palestinians have been killed by Israel's military attacks over the last four weeks, according to Gaza's health ministry. “It’s been absolute chaos and complete division,” said Logan Cyr, a UCLA law student.
At least tens of thousands of people gathered in the nation's capital on Saturday for one of the biggest pro-Palestinian protests in the U.S. since the Israeli bombardment of Gaza began in response to the attack by Hamas militants last month. UNC-Chapel Hill's interim chancellor Lee Roberts and provost Christopher Clemens said in a statement Tuesday that student protesters must leave their encampment at the Polk Place quadrangle. The statement was acknowledged by UNC Students for Justice in Palestine in a photo posted to Instagram. After a peaceful protest Monday afternoon, a group “broke into Millar library, the main PSU library, and entered the building.
Officers arrested multiple people, including at least one professor, according to local media reports. Brown University, another member of the Ivy League, reached an agreement Tuesday with protesters on its Rhode Island campus. Demonstrators said they would close their encampment in exchange for administrators taking a vote to consider divestment from Israel in October. The compromise appeared to mark the first time a U.S. college has agreed to vote on divestment in the wake of the protests.

In a recent Instagram video, Tilbury explained that the wands, which offer various blush and highlight shades, are a “viral, sellout sensation,” for their ability to flatter and illuminate the complexion. Since these perfumes are pretty pricey at $150 a pop, I'd suggest testing a sample or purchasing a smaller size to make sure you found your favorite before splurging on the full size. They also have a discovery set that would be perfect to test out all six fragrances. While it was fun testing all of these fragrances, I didn't particularly notice any big emotional changes while wearing them. I even tried wearing More Sex and Love combined when hanging out with a romantic partner, but it didn't seem to do much on his end. However, I do love the fragrances individually and plan on wearing them strictly because they make my nose happy.

On youtube, I’ve seen a tutorial Charlotte did on Kim using and she used the Lip Cheat Lip Liner in Pillow Talk all over her lips and she dabbed the lipstick on instead of swiping it. That’s how I apply it too and I absolutely love it like this, it becomes the perfect nude for me and it makes my lips look huge. Yeah, I wasn’t too impressed when I saw some of the initial swatches for the lighter shades in this range -they looked cakey, uneven, and/or settled into lip lines. I know lighter shades are harder to get right, but at this price point, it has to look at least decent. In the video, Tilbury says that no other beauty product compares to the “dreamy, fresh, glass-like, candlelight skin” effect of the wands. I really like this lipstick, I like the effect and the formula, it feels beautiful on the lips. I absolutely love the packaging and the shape makes it soooo easy to put on.
I love the concept of this range and the colours look amazing. I haven’t heard great things about the formula though.. Kim’s lipstick is way too deathly for me but the texture looks very nice too. Charlotte Tilbury Kim K.W. Lipstick ($32.00 for 0.12 oz.) is a light-medium, pinky beige with warm undertones and a creamy, natural sheen. This shade is part of the original Kissing formula, so it is much creamier, a little weightier, and has more slip than the Matte Revolution range. It was also hydrating and more comfortable to wear over time, though this particular shade ended up applying somewhat streaky due to the amount of slip and the lighter color.
If needed, place an item to prop up the overhang while the icing hardens and the roof sticks securely. Repeat with the other side of the roof and provide support as it dries as well. Once two pieces are stuck to the base, pipe icing along the border where they join, to cement the two pieces together (Image 39). Mix until you get a smooth, thick royal icing mixture (Image 34). The correct consistency should be spreadable but stiff, so that the royal icing will not “run” or spread, but still easily pipeable (Image 35). If you’re using egg whites, whisk the egg whites and cream of tartar until you have a foamy mixture (Images 31 and 32).
Royal icing for the gingerbread house
I immediately knew it wasn’t what I wanted. I didn’t want to subject myself to more intrusive medical procedures, and having biological children has never been important to me. My doctors and my family wanted me to fully understand the weight of my decision, giving me multiple chances to change my mind, but I didn’t. The long delay from finding a mass to getting the ultrasound and a diagnosis is just one way young cancer patients often aren’t taken seriously. I’ve heard of women whose doctors wouldn’t order a mammogram because they were considered too young. Colon cancer patients are sometimes diagnosed with hemorrhoids rather than cancer.
How to make a gingerbread house (and all the tips!)
I found it helpful to weigh the dough into 20 oz chunks, pat into squares, and wrap individually before refrigerating. That way, you can take out a square of cold dough and roll it out for each slab. This house is approximately 7 inches tall with the chimney and 6 inches wide.
The Best Vanilla Cake Recipe
You can use a cardboard cake board, a large platter or plate, a pretty cookie sheet, a cutting board, or a cake stand. Royal icing is hands down the best option for gingerbread construction. It hardens up rock hard and is the glue that will hold the walls and roof of your house well while still being edible.

It lends to a sturdy dough that doesn’t spread when baked. I have a 6 qt mixer and ended up halving it still. It's a very thick dough so I think doing in two batches also guarantees proper mixing. I wish the ingredients were listed in amounts for half batch, since you can’t exactly measure out the full amount and then divide in half without remeasuring.
Peanut Butter S’mores Bars
The icing is ready when it is smooth, glossy, and holds a stiff peak. Transfer the icing into piping bags and tightly cover any excess for later use — it dries out easily. The store-bought kit candy always tastes weird to me and the royal frosting is just terrible! Give homemade gingerbread houses a shot.
Step 7 – Stick the template onto the cardboard. Use slightly thick cardboard and non-toxic glue like a glue stick. Apply the glue on the back of the printed template. Remember to apply the glue outside of the template line AND inside (Image 17).
Discard paper patterns and place each cut-out on a wire rack. If your dough is still a little soft at this step, it’s okay. This specialty ingredient hardens quickly and is more fast-drying than butter frosting. In addition, if you want to keep your house for as long as possible, you’ll want a frosting that’s devoid of any butter, as this can cause it to rot faster.
Allow the royal icing to completely set and harden before adding the roof (Image 41). Place the royal icing in a large piping bag or a ziploc bag (Image 36). Seal the opening of the piping bag or ziploc bag, making sure to remove as much air as possible. Exposure to air will cause the royal icing to harden.
Maybe you'd like to set the house at an angle instead of squared up. Once you start assembling the pieces, it might be hard to go back and move everything around. I used the Ateco 352 leaf tip and Ateco 32 star tip to create the different types of branches and leaves on these trees. I recommend starting a little above the base of the overturned sugar cone and working your way up to the top to cover it with icing. I was able to hold it on the inside with my fingers and just twist my wrist to work around the cone. I recommend making the gingerbread a day or two in advance so that you can relax and enjoy putting the gingerbread house together later.
Then, build a few snowmen out of jumbo marshmallows and tinted royal icing. Finally, add a few small bottlebrush trees to complete the scene. In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, baking powder, ginger, cinnamon and cloves. In another bowl, whisk together the egg, molasses, oil and brown sugar. Gradually combine the wet ingredients with the dry ingredients, mixing well. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and bake until golden brown, about minutes.
For young patients like me, it’s hard to wrap our minds around the randomness of it all. When my family and I asked the doctor, she said it was simply bad luck. It’s possible there’s nothing I did or could have done. But that doesn’t make it any less unsettling to me or the other young adults who increasingly find themselves in this situation.
How to Make a Gingerbread House from a Kit
I’m including templates (in the recipe card) to make either 1 larger gingerbread house (which I demonstrate in the video) or two smaller houses (shown above). This recipe will make enough to do either one of these. Don’t start decorating right away—your house needs time to dry. Follow the directions on the package, but chances are you'll need at least 30 minutes drying time if you want your house to stay standing. Printable Gingerbread House template—print on 8.5x11-inch paper then cut out your pieces for a perfectly proportioned house.

After all, it’s an art, not a science, so let your imagination guide you, enlist a team of decorators or take inspiration from the themes below. Add shingles to roof pieces, attaching the round cutouts with a small amount of icing and overlapping them slightly, using photo as a guide. Let decorated gingerbread pieces stand at least 30 minutes until icing is set, before assembling the house. On lightly floured 16x12-inch piece of cooking parchment paper, roll remaining dough 1/8-inch thick.
Roll out the dough on a sheet of lightly floured parchment paper (so you can easily transfer it to a baking sheet later). Keep it at least 1/4" thick for strong walls. Lightly flour the surface of the dough and place your cutters or pattern pieces about 1" apart. Cut out all the shapes, then remove the excess dough between your pieces. By removing the excess rather than moving your cut pieces, you will avoid distorting the shapes, which can affect how well they’ll fit together. Re-roll the excess dough to cut any remaining shapes, or use it to make extras like gingerbread people. There are a few things you can do to make sure your gingerbread house is nice and sturdy.
Plus, I have even included TWO free printable pattern that is easy to follow. This post is everything that you need to know on how to make a gingerbread house and I’m here for support and troubleshooting if you need it. Add more icing to support the seam, if necessary. Prop up walls with cans or bottles; allow to set 30 minutes. Repeat for remaining back wall and side wall pieces, attaching all sides of house; allow to set 30 minutes. In large bowl, beat royal icing ingredients with electric mixer on low speed until mixed.
Royal icing is used to attach decorations and hold together walls and roof together. Mix up a batch using the instructions below. These are also good steps to take ahead of time, if possible. Remember to print out the template to make cutting out your pieces easy. If you don’t think you’ll use meringue powder or cream of tartar for anything besides this recipe, look for these items in the bulk section of your grocery store. Pantry staples can add a lot of visual impact to your gingerbread house.
The rolled out dough is easier to cut if it’s frozen, so you can choose to freeze it for about 30 minutes before cutting it. I use a guide that is about 5 – 6 mm thick for most of the dough. For smaller parts of the house (chimney, doors, window shutters), I use dough guide that is thinner, about 3 mm. The rolled out dough should fit inside a half sheet baking sheet.
A few years ago there was also a video on Julia demonstrating decorating technique for the house, piping royal icing. Does anyone know where I can still find it? I am in the process of trying this for the first time. As I bake the sheets of gingerbread they are getting bubbles on the surface...
Happiness Is Homemade has a great tutorial, including tips on how to cut graham cracker pieces. Before assembling your house, add your decorations. For more ideas on how to do this, check out How to Decorate Your Gingerbread House. Look for the more specialized items in the cake decorating section of your local craft store; see notes below. It’s time to gather your ingredients and equipment. First, print out the template and read through the recipe.
If there are any edges that are not straight, don’t worry! You can use royal icing to fill and straighten the edges, or you can use a micro planer to carefully shave off excess cookie on the sides (Image 28). Use dough thickness guide to make it easier to roll out the dough to an even thickness. This is such a key ingredient for a classic gingerbread dough! Make sure to use “fancy molasses”, as it has a sweet flavor with deep molassey and slightly acidic flavors.
I use a mixture of ground ginger, cinnamon, allspice, nutmeg, and cloves. I've had a complicated "situationship" with this classic dish, but finally have a recipe I love. For me, these stuffed semolina pancakes are wrapped up in nostalgia and family. As a hobby farmer, business owner, and mom of five, I'm all about keeping it simple in the kitchen. I'm here to help you make meal times a breeze.
All the baking ingredients below are easy to find at most grocery stores. Also, if you’re using anything non-edible to construct your house, such as hot glue, you cannot eat the assembled house. This is a fun family activity that you can do with your kids!
Step 6 – Print out the gingerbread house template and get the tools ready. Such as a glue stick, cardboard, and craft or utility knife (Image 16). The whole scene glistens with a fresh dusting of Sparkling Sugar. Agree with others - cut the gingerbread after it comes out of the oven, while it is still soft.

Whether you work with an individual travel agent or a large online agency, onboard credit is a standard promotional bonus common in the industry. And the larger the agency, the deeper their pockets when it comes to onboard credit. Loyalty is noticed; if you've worked with the same travel agent for every cruise, your OBC amount is likely to build over time. Whenever you spend money with Carnival Cruise Lines, you’ll earn two points per $1.
The Carnival cruise credit card's two big highlights are that it has no annual fee and no foreign transaction fees. Cardmembers also receive a 10% discount on shore excursion packages (taxes and fees not included) when purchased on Carnival.com prior to sailing. Unless you’re frequently setting sail with qualifying cruise lines, it will take you a while to rack up points. Other no-annual-fee travel credit cards earn bonus rewards in everyday spending categories — like dining or groceries — or they may simply offer a high flat rate, like 1.5% back on purchases of any kind.

Active and retired military members are always eligible for reduced rates, but OBC isn't included in this permanent deal; you'll have to be on the lookout for time-limited promotions in order to snag the credit. Another sure-fire way to earn those precious credits is by investing in the company, a common perk among major cruise lines. At Carnival, you're entitled to $50 OBC on cruises of 6 days or less, $100 on cruises of 7-13 days and $250 on longer if you own a minimum of 100 shares. Just keep in mind that the card charges a balance transfer fee of $5 or 3% of the transfer, whichever is greater. The bonus points help mitigate the cost, but don’t do it just for the points. If you do plan to apply for the card and have high-interest credit card debt, seriously consider using the card’s balance transfer promotion.
This may mean that you could risk missing out on some of the most popular tours if they're fully booked by the time you embark. We combine these factors with an evaluation of brand reputation and customer satisfaction to ensure you're getting the best card recommendations. Since Carnival travels to so many foreign ports, it's nice for cardholders to know they won't have to pay a foreign transaction fee as long as they make purchases with their Carnival® World Mastercard®. To bump the rewards of being a Carnival® World Mastercard® cardholder, 10% of the cost of shore excursions is returned in the form of a statement credit. Overall, the Carnival Credit Card is a good option if you are a fan of Carnival Cruise Lines and World's Leading Cruise Lines. Apart from some pretty generous rewards, the card also comes with a $0 annual fee and a 0% foreign transaction fee.

The 5% transfer fee means an additional $350 will be added to their balance due. Anyone who regularly cruises with Carnival can benefit from the way reward points are issued back to them through statement credits. The most valuable rewards -- 20,000 FunPoints as a welcome offer and points earned on purchases -- can only be used toward Carnival purchases. The Carnival® World Mastercard® -- cobranded with Barclays -- may appeal to fans of Carnival Cruise Lines, but for others, it's likely to fall short. Get 10% back as a statement credit when you book a Carnival shore excursion on carnival.com prior to your cruise. Unless you cruise with Carnival multiple times a year, you won’t get many chances to earn bonus rewards with this card.
When you get your rewards, your redemption options are limited to Carnival and some other cruise lines. When a credit card charges an annual fee, you have to do extra math to make sure you’re getting enough value out of the card to make it worth the cost. In some cases, co-branded credit cards offer exclusive perks specific to the partner brand.
The credit card is not linked with the VIFP club, meaning that cruise goers will not be able to earn extra benefits like priority boarding or cabin upgrades. This card does not offer rewards on other travel, such as booking flights or purchasing gas. The goal of credit cards is to make them work for you without draining your checking account. The fact that the Carnival® World Mastercard® has no annual fee is a step in the right direction. Carnival Corporation and UK bank Barclays have renewed their partnership, allowing guests to save for additional statement credits onboard and points for further discounts.
With hundreds of dollars in credits that can be applied to a first cruise, the cards on offer from Carnival and Barclays are undoubtedly worth a look. Besides these benefits, the Princess Cruises card offers guests a concierge service; the Holland America card allows guests to use points towards airfare, with many more options on offer. Those points can then be used as a redemption for the onboard statements of account. Five thousand points translate into a $50 credit, which can also be redeemed up to six months post-cruise.
Premium eateries also include some cafes and bars like Coffee Bar, JavaBlue Café and the RedFrog Pub. Perhaps the most common out-of-pocket expense for many cruisers are the shore excursions offered by the cruise line in ports of call. Naturally, you always have the option to venture off on your own and forego Carnival's tours. But if you have the OBC to spare, it may be worth considering using it on one of the shore excursions offered by the line. Similarly, if Carnival is forced to cancel or modify an itinerary for whatever reason, they will typically offer passengers a few options. As with any credit card, it’s crucial to analyze your spending before choosing a credit card.
Once you've submitted your application, you should get an answer instantly. However, it can sometimes take up to 14 days for the issuer to reach a decision. If you're approved, you'll have your new card in the mail within 7-10 business days. Sometimes, however, you can end up with an onboard credit in more indirect ways. You'll get the best value by redeeming your FunPoints on eligible Carnival purchases and onboard amenities.
